My Open Letter to "Music" Television

Dear MTV:

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression you were a MUSIC channel. Aren't you suppose to keep us up to date on all the latest MUSIC and MUSIC videos? Did you note the word MUSIC? When I look at my channel guide I'm always hoping to see listings for MUSIC. Silly me. I guess I didn't realize that True Life, Parental Control, or for Pete's sake, Paris Hilton's My New BFF, was MUSIC. I don't care who wants to be "besties" (is that even a word?) with Paris. Sure, she "sings" if we can call it that, and she's been in music videos (what else does she have to do?), but I don't want to see grown women competing to be her friend. Can't she get her own BFF? Oh right, she's Paris.

I digress though. Back to looking for MUSIC on your channel. Would it kill you to actually run videos for more than a couple hours out of a 24 period? When I was told MTV would run the new video for the Paramore song Decode, written just for the Twilight movie, on and off all day for one day in November, I tuned in several times. No video. No music. Just Paris. Later I tried again but then it was Rob and Big. Again, I don't care about Rob, or Big. I never did catch the video that day. That would have been too easy. To find a MUSIC video on a MUSIC channel, can you imagine?

~Brenda, an irate MUSIC fan.

Oh, I so agree. My daughter loves to watch that crap and I have to leave the room. That Paris and her bff's (I could come up with new words for that). Back in the 80's. I want my MTV. That was good. Just go to youtube and you can find the Paramore video. The internet, what a wonderful tool we have. You can find anything at your finger tips. Have a great day. 18 hours baby.

oh, now this is too funny in a variety of ways.

first, it is completely true. there is no more music on mtv. vh1 still plays some, but even i am too cool for what they play on there.

second, slipping in the part about rob and big... priceless.

third, that you are desperate to see the new paramore video

fourth, that it was made just for the dang twilight movie!

fifth, you've got paris down to a T. (or is it tee?)

ps: thank you for your sweet and continuous support. you're the best.

Sigh. I totally remember when MTV played music. When was that, in the 80's?

Here from SITS...Remember when MTV had VJ's??? Remember when they were cutting edge? Remember when they played the risque videos at 2am ONLY?

Our teenage years spent watching MTV seem like such a dream now...

Amen! I couldn't agree with you more. Where is the music? Popping over from SITS!
Have a great day!

Thank goodness MTV hasn't invaded our house yet.

Have fun watching Twilight! I am still thinking about whether or not to see it... :-)

Hi! Just stopping by from SITS --

You forgot to mention one very important show: The Hills! They play music during the opening credits, so it counts as a legitimate music show, right?

(Please tell me you could hear the sarcasm in that comment!) :)

Well, It makes sense to me that MTV has moved past music videos. After all, if I want to watch a music video, all I have to do is enter the song into YouTube. THAT'S the MTV of the 2000s!

i hear you. not many things frustrate me more. i can't remember the last time i actually enjoyed MUSIC on MTV. they're going downhill fast...well in my eyes at least.

I think the last time I watched MTV was 1989? Or maybe right after the Real World New Orleans wrapped up. Can't remember. All I know is that it's blocked at our house now that we have preteens. YouTube is our new MTV.
Great letter! Have a great day!

I, too, miss the music video days of MTV. They should really change the name already.

So true...although, I have to admit that I do love me some Hills...

Concur!

I watched last year's {?} music awards and vividly remember Justin Timberlake asking producers to get rid of the reality crap and bring the music back to MTV.

Happy Friday SITSta!

I couldn't agree more. TRL seemed like the last vestige of hope for Music television....alas, now that is gone too

Yeah, MTV pretty much sucks the big one. It all went downhill after The Real World...

VH1 isn't far behind. At least they used to play good stuff like Behind the Music.

There is one now that actually plays videos called MTV Hits, but we'll see how long it lasts.

Oh how I miss MTV! I wish it was like back in the 80's where they only played MUSIC videos instead of crap like Paris's new BFF...why do people care about crap like this?

You put a smile on my face...

Oh, Hello! I was wondering that same thing. I remember the "Video killed the Radio Star" day on MTV.

Now it is all trashy reality shows.

The good days of MTV are gone. I cannot stand the crap on there now.

Even VH1 is succumbing to the No Music format - what gives?!?!?

That M doesn't stand for music, it stands for "Meh".

Veggie Mom said...

I prefer VH1 now. All those "reality" shows on MTV...the channel really should be re-named RTV. Hey there, SITSta! I've got a Great Giveaway Goin' On over at my place. Please drop by when you get a chance!

I remember MTV when the M actually stood for something other than "Mindless." Of course, that was a long, long time ago.

Ahh yes, I remember the music channels that used to play music. That's so old skool though. Now we're supposed to watch You Tube or something like that.
